A Critical Analysis of Individualism on the Foundational Principles of Family; A Study on the Phenomenon of Celibacy and Refraining from Childbearing in Islamic Teachings and Culture

Abstract
Culture is a factor that gives direction and meaning to human life, which, depending on its underlying principles and rules, will have a different scope of influence. The Islamic culture, in the sense of a cohesive set of values and beliefs centered on monotheism, has shown considerable attention to the foundation of the family and the necessity of its timely formation, strengthening, and flourishing. However, contemporary life has led to an individualism that is contrary to the core principles of the pure human nature (fitra). The current library-based research, focusing on the position of the individual and the subject of society in Islamic culture, employs a descriptive-analytical method to analyze and evaluate the issue of the influence of individualism on celibacy and refraining from childbearing from the perspective of Islamic culture. The findings of the research indicate that the values of individualism not only do not negate individual and social values but are meaningfully related to them. The individual, by facing the challenge of upholding their authenticity in the context of rights and private boundaries—not only in marital relations but also in forming a family and expanding human relationships—will experience a personal fulfillment that transcends mere emotional bonds through marriage and childbearing. This is a topic based on divine promises of temporal and eternal rewards for the married individual, and it provides the foundation and environment for the formation of a family. This strengthens the individual and society and removes the probable fear and anxiety surrounding marriage and childbearing.
